My dog won't stop licking furniture and carpets what can I do?

My 14 yr old Sheltie mix constantly licks the carpets, or any furniture she is sitting on. I don't want this behavior to rub off on my other 2 dogs and I am constantly shampooing carpets & chairs. I have tried spraying Bitter Apple and Stay Off on certain spots, but I can't really spray every inch of my floors with it and its only a small deterrent. I would really like to fix this behavior problem rather than just spray something to keep her from doing it temporarily. She has been doing this for awhile now and I'm all out of ideas. I've tried squirting her with a spray bottle when I catch her but it doesn't even seem to phase her. I started taking her on walks more often and encouraging her to play with the other dogs thinking maybe she was bored, but that hasn't made a difference either. This is also making her breath (which wasn't pleasant to start with) even worse! If anyone has any suggestions or possibly a reason why she is doing this I would be happy to hear them. Thanks!

If you don't already, get the dog some chew toys with flavors. Or try the Kong Chew Toy. There is treats you can stuff inside, and there is also some cheese flavored stuff, like cheesewiz, that you can squirt inside and my dog just licks at it forever. In a nutshell just make sure the dog always has something around that os OK to lick on. So you can always re-direct the dog to an appropriate thing to lick at. Hope this helps!
