Outdoor Pet Containment: What causes escape behavior and how to resolve it

Why does my dog escape the yard and want run away?
Easy enough to understand, dog wants to run towards something that seems like a self-positive or wants to get away from something that feels like a self-negative.

Positives can be anything from a food source to a potential mate. Possibly a human companion or an escape can be triggered by the canine will to chase, hunt, or fight. Negatives can be uncomfortable feelings of boredom, restlessness, fear, and loneliness.

Pet containment will only work well for you if you have addressed behavior issues that cause the escape desire. A perfect example of this is the infamous fence escape. Dogs by nature do not want to be alone for a prolonged period of time. They are either going to request to come back inside the house, or escape the fence to roam or find activity elsewhere. Then the question falls back on the owner, "Just how long is the dog unsupervised and left alone in the yard?"

Escape frustration.
Another thought to consider. Perhaps the barricade is strong enough for extended time alone. Fact remains; dog doesn't want to be alone for so long. But cannot escape, either. Gets frustrated. Behavior is poor. Mass chaos erupts upon discovery of destruction or chewing. You get the idea.

Behaviors and Punishments.
Boredom, separation anxiety, fearfulness, and sexual excursions are all behavior issues you may want to research and resolve when looking into outdoor pet containment options. Highly recommend having your pets sterilized.

Think about this. Punish your dog when it runs away and what does your dog get? A beating, perhaps? Locked up in the crate? Excessively instilling fear into your pet only teaches:

1. Do not get caught.
2. More fear of you, causing even more problems. Worse if fear is already a culprit.

So what is a pet owner to do? First, think about what you could have done to avoid the scene. Where were you? How long were you gone? Have you trained enough with commands? Yes, as with any of your canine training, catching the escape artist in the act is reason for scolding.

Scolding - not a beating. No harsh, abusive pain. "Incompetent aggressive training breeds aggression", a trainer told us. What you are going for here is appropriate reprimands, or corrections.

Shaking your head saying,"Yeah right"? Of course there is more patience and technique involved. Cures relate to causes. This is again why underlying behaviors need to be resolved when considering outdoor pet containment.
